I am 72 years old and have been playing chess since I was 16 when I started a job where two local chess club members worked. In those days there was no internet and the only information was from some newspapers, books and “Chess” magazine. There was no real coaching -just playing the game. The English Chess Federation only devoted coaching time to elite and disregarded the grass roots – much the same as it does today!?
When I was in my early 60s I asked a strong player (much younger than me) at a tournament whether I would benefit from coaching. He asked me my age and then said don’t bother, just enjoy the game.
As I see it the difficulty would be finding a compatible coach! I am probably to set in my ways for a coach to be useful.
