({It is easy to see that} 1 Qxa8 gxf1Q { doesn't bring White much.}) 1... Qxh2 {Now comes the key point of the study. White has to move his rook. But where?} 2 Rb1!!! {A move of amazing depth. Black's next moves will involve h4-h3 and c4 advance, followed by queen sacrifice and h2 . Such a scenario would result in a stalemate. The text move prevents this plan by Black in a beautiful way.} 2... h4 3 Kc6!! {The point. White is running with his king toward the a8 square. Why? Just wait a moment...} 3... h3 4 Kb7!! 4 ... c4 5 Ka8!! ({It is important to note here that a move like} 5 Ra1 {would be met by} 5... Qc7+ {and Black forces a draw with} 6... h2 {next.}) {Now Black has a choice.} 5.. Qb8+ {Checking with the queen is slightly more difficult.} (5 ... c3 6 bxc3 Qb8 7 Rxb8! {And whatever Black plays, 8 Rh8 wins for White.}) 6 Kxb8 h2 {But now White can perform a three - move smothered mate by bringing his knight to g3:} 7 Nd4 c3 8 Ne2 c2 9 Ng3 ++ {Simply amazing!!} your web browser and/or your host do not support iframes as required to display the chessboard; alternatively your wordpress theme might suppress the html iframe tag from articles or excerpts Chess studies Previous Post← Chess tactics 21 Chess tactics 21 Next PostChess tactics 22 → Chess tactics 22 You May Also Like Chess Studies Chess Training Chess study 3 – Genrikh Kasparian Study View Post Chess Studies Chess Training Chess studies 11 – Kotov Mitrofanov study View Post Chess Studies Chess Training Chess study 12 – Gurgenidze Kalandadze study View Post
